The Art of Positional Play

The Art of Positional Play

Htt Football Academy

Positioning in football, not to be confused with playing positions, refers to the strategic placement of players during play to achieve specific ends. A key attribute that players must have to compete at the highest level is an understanding of gameplay. While the focus is usually on technical brilliance, the best players are usually tactically gifted as well; they can read the game and anticipate situations.

In times past, positioning was largely the domain of strikers; no striker can become a prolific goalscorer without mastering the art of positioning. Tactical changes in modern football have, however, widened the ambit of positioning as movement off the ball is now almost as important as movement with the ball. Elite players are now required to understand how to position themselves to make the best of set pieces, attack second balls, or thwart counterattacks.

Positioning is an important part of our training routine at HTT Academy. We group our players by age and ability and usually tailor our training curriculum to suit each group’s needs. There are, however, some aspects of football that we teach all players regardless of their skill level. Mastery of these elements helps players develop and sharpen their skills quicker by giving them a broader understanding of the game. As it depends on the ability to make predictions and respond sharply, positioning falls in this category. It is a skill that can make gifted players into football geniuses and help less technically gifted players become more effective.

Such players become adept at receiving long passes and beating offside traps.
The best crosses – in which the ball meets a player’s head or feet precisely – are perfect demonstrations of excellent positioning.
