How HTT Academy youngsters should handle referee errors

Read Time: 2 minute(s)

The recent La Liga game between Real Madrid and Almeria has been noted for its controversial nature as Los Blancos came from two goals down to steal a 3-2 win with the aid of some poor officiating.

The Almeria players felt cheated and reacted unprofessionally which necessitates a reminder to HTT Academy players about the importance of maintaining professionalism even in the face of poor refereeing decisions.

Here are some tips on how young football stars can handle referee errors:

  1. Stay Calm and Composed:
    • It’s essential to remain calm and composed, even if you disagree with a referee’s decision. Losing your temper or reacting emotionally can lead to disciplinary actions and negatively affect your team.
  2. Focus on the Game:
    • Instead of dwelling on a referee’s mistake, redirect your focus to the game itself. Concentrate on your performance, your role in the team, and contributing positively to the match.
  3. Avoid Confrontation:
    • Refrain from directly confronting or arguing with the referee. Engaging in heated discussions rarely leads to a change in decision and may result in penalties such as yellow or red cards.
  4. Express Disagreement Respectfully:
    • If you feel the need to express your disagreement with a decision, do so respectfully. Choose your words carefully, and avoid using offensive language or gestures. Remember that referees are human and can make mistakes.
  5. Focus on what you can control:
    • Emphasize to your teammates the importance of focusing on aspects of the game that are within your control, such as teamwork, strategy, and individual performance.
  6. Use the Frustration as Motivation:
    • Channel your frustration into motivation. Use the perceived injustice as fuel to elevate your performance and prove your team’s abilities on the field.
  7. Post-Match Communication:
    • If a controversial decision significantly affects the outcome of a match, consider discussing the matter with your coach or team officials after the game. Provide constructive feedback, and let the coaching staff handle any formal complaints or appeals.
  8. Respect Referee Authority:
    • While expressing disagreement is acceptable, it’s crucial to respect the authority of the referee. Refrain from openly challenging or disrespecting their decisions, as this can lead to disciplinary actions.
  9. Review and Learn:
    • After the match, review the game objectively. Identify areas where your team could have performed better and focus on improving those aspects for future matches.
